Types of Dental Sedation

  • Nitrous Oxide: The most common type of dental sedation is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. You will remain awake, but you’ll feel giddy and light-headed. You may even laugh uncontrollably. The effects wear off immediately after you start breathing regular air.

  • Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves a prescription pill taken before your appointment. You will remain awake, but you’ll feel dazed and lethargic. In some cases, you may not have any memory of your visit or the procedure. The effects wear off within a few hours.

  • IV Sedation: Light IV sedation allows you to remain awake, but puts you at ease. You will feel overwhelmingly relaxed. The effects wear off after a few hours.

  • General Anesthesia: Under the effects of general anesthesia, you will lose all consciousness. You will not hear or see anything around you. You will have no memory of your treatment. General anesthesia wears off after several hours.

How Much Does Dental Sedation Cost?

Dental Sedation has a wide price range, depending on your specific diagnosis. Our $25 Emergency Special will allow our doctor to give you a more specific treatment and price.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Sedation

  • Is dental anxiety common?

Studies suggest that as many as 50% of Americans are afraid of the dentist. Of that, 20% delay or avoid dental work due to their fear.

  • Is dental sedation just for anxiety?

No! Many people can benefit from sedation dentistry, including those who:

    • Have a strong gag reflex.
    • Have difficulty getting numb.
    • Have extremely sensitive teeth.
    • Struggle to sit still for a long time.
    • Are undergoing a very long procedure.
  • What happens if I avoid the dentist?

Bi-annual dental exams are necessary to identify tooth decay, gum disease, cavities, infection, and signs of oral cancer. Left untreated, these symptoms may lead to unintended consequences such as bad breath, cracked teeth, severe toothache, tooth loss, or even life-threatening complications.

  • What kind of treatment can I have while sedated?
Anything! We can do all dental treatment while you are sedated.
  • How can I remain calm naturally?
    • Meditate: Focus on slow, controlled breathing. Holding your breath can actually increase your anxiety, so breathe in and out with measured intention.
    • Distract yourself: Bring your headphones and listen to music, an audiobook, or your favorite podcast. This can drown out the sound of dental instruments and help you remain at peace.
    • Communicate: Be sure to share your fears with our staff. We’re compassionate and empathetic, and we know how common dental anxiety is. We won’t take offense.
